Moderate Sedation Tools and Services

Moderate Sedation

Consciously Sedating?

There are approximately 1,690 sedation-related incidents per year nationwide — ranging from an overdose of drugs to a procedure that is started before a patient is adequately sedated.

Are you confident in the ability of your team to deliver moderate, or conscious, sedation?

Participants and Training Objectives

The goal of MSC's moderate sedation program is to increase and reinforce the competence and confidence of any healthcare team member associated with the care of individuals requiring moderate (conscious) sedation, including physicians, nurses and technologists. Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify the four levels of sedation according to the American Society of Anesthesiology guidelines.
  2. Describe healthcare provider requirements for administering moderate sedation.
  3. Perform an efficient pre-procedure assessment with emphasis on cardiopulmonary history, airway evaluation and high-risk sedation history elements.
  4. Identify correct medications and dosages used during the induction of moderate sedation.
  5. Describe monitoring required during the induction of moderate sedation.
  6. Describe potential causative factors for adverse events.
  7. Successfully rescue a patient in respiratory distress.
  8. Describe discharge criteria for a patient post-procedure.

Clinical Applicability

The University HealthSystem Consortium, which includes 95 of the nation’s largest academic medical centers, has presented data suggesting that there are 1,690 incidents a year related to sedation—ranging from an overdose of drugs to a procedure that is started before a patient is adequately sedated.
