A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine finds that pneumonia and sepsis caused by hospital-acquired infections killed 48,000 people and increased U.S. healthcare costs by $8.1 billion in 2006. The 2008 HealthGrades National Hospital Quality Study found that if hospital quality improvement efforts were targeted to just four diagnoses (of which sepsis was found to be the leading cause of death), the U.S. could reduce potentially preventable deaths by approximately 54 percent, translating into hundreds of thousands of lives saved.
